Weißbriach im Gitschtal

In a side valley of the Gailtal, the Gitschtal, lies the idyllic village of Weißbriach. Is it one of ten resorts in this snow-sure valley, and is known as a secret hotpot. If you glance down the slim valley from one of the higher located Alpine huts, you can enjoy a picture postcard view. The valley basin and the adjoining, softly sloping, forested mountain sides covered in snow, are a breathtaking image.

A leisure time highlight, close to nature, is ice-skating on the huge mountain lakes round about the villages. On Europe's largest natural ice rink, the Weissen Lake, you can enjoy a multitude of activities in winter. he frozen lake measures 6.5 km² and hosts sports, such as ice hockey, ice-skating curling and even ice golf. Along the picturesque shore you can find some cafés with terraces, offering a lovely view of the powdery, white lake. Down the south-eastern way you will come to the Pressegger Lake. Here you can also find round courses, curling alleys, and an ice hockey rink. Tobogganing is also a popular activity in Weißbriach. At the Berggeist hut there is a 3 km long run waiting to be tried out. Snow grooming vehicles take you up to the top of the run, which also illuminated in the evenings.

Gailtal

The Gail's source can be found in Eastern Tyrol. After approx. 120 km it flows into the Drau. In the same way the Gailtal extends from Tilliach in Eastern Tyrol to Villach in Carinthia. The fascinating landscape is dominated by contrast of wide, flat valleys and rough mountain sides. The valley is outlined by the mountain ranges of the Lienz Dolomites, the Gailtal Alps, the Karnish Alps and the Karanwanks. In the lower Gailtal one of the top 10 ski areas in Austria can be found, the Nassfeld-Hermagor.
