Ski vacations Rumburk – Hidden beauty in the northern corner of the Czech Republic!

Rumburk

Rumburk lies in the northern part of the Czech Republic, found in the so-called "Šluknov Hook", near the German border. Dresden is located about 75 km away. Rumburk is one of three larger cities in the Lusatian Mountains and lies on the border of Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland, which proves to be a great day trip destination thanks to its gorgeous national park and and Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

The city is bursting with Saxon-Bohemian culture and tells a moving story, which can be heard best when making your way through one of the alleys in the old city. The craft of weaving has a large cultural and financial influence on Rumburk, and the city has profited for centuries from its sales of excellent fabrics. All around the historical marketplace, colourful baroque and renaissance-era buildings with delicate archways invite you to come stroll by. In the middle of the marketplace, a memorial "plague column" of the Holy Trinity stands tall. However, the Loreto Basilica of the Capuchin Monastery is easily the most well-known architectural monument in Rumburk from the 17th century. The "Loreta" is basilica constructed from sandstone with Italian influences and happens to be the most northern-lying structure of its kind in Europe. If that's not enough for you, you can get to know several other sacred monuments and churches in the area when making your way around the city.

Another sight to see is the Dymník, a basalt column near Rumburk (516 m high). From the watch tower, travellers can enjoy a great view of the Lusatian Mountains and Bohemian Switzerland. The area surrounding Rumburk is characterised by soft, rolling hills, where active winter sports fans will find a hiking and cross-country paradise. On the third-highest peak of the Lusatian Mountains, the Jedlová (774 m high), a small ski area can be found of which offers both predominantly easy pistes as well as night skiing.

Giant Mountains

The Giant Mountains form the largest part of the Sudetes, which lie between Poland and the Czech Republic. The Sněžka (Snow Top) is the highest peak of the Sudetes and therefore also the highest mountain in the Czech Republic, with an altitude of 1,600 m. Typical for the region are the jagged stone rims and mountain lakes. Near the peak of Mount Medvědín you can find the source of the River Elbe. The winter sports resorts in the Giant Mountain National Park offer everything necessary for a successful skiing holiday. Here you will find well prepared pistes, modern lift systems, endless cross-country ski tracks on beautiful high plateaus and a variety of leisure time and aprés ski facilities, which don't have to hide their faces from their Austrian counterparts!
