Wurzbach
The small district of Wurzbach is located at approx. 525 m altitude in the soft hills of the Thuringian Forest. The village lies on the border of the Franken Forest, hence is also know as "the gateway to the Franken Forest". Classic-style slate-covered buildings, made from the slate as mined from the Thuringian mountains, characterise the appearance of the resort. They form the largest part of the traditional atmosphere and charm of this idyllic spot. The Thuringian Forest, the "green heart of Germany", transforms into a beautiful white wonderland in winter, which is also well suited for winter sports and relaxation, with the refreshing, crystal clear air. Wurzbach offers an interesting mix of skiing and snowboarding, cross-country, tobogganing, hiking and a lot of cultural offers. The foundry Heinrichshütte, which also displays one of the largest steam engines in entire Europe, is known as one of best place to experience industry culture development. The colourfully designed transformer tower on the market square is a unique landmark and always cause for inquisitive questions.
Great further excursion destinations are e.g. the nearby the Franken Forest with many hiking opportunities, the fairy grotto in Saalfeld/Saale (34 km), the beautiful home-town of the famous poet Goethe, Weimar (87 km) and the federal state capital (95 km).

The approx. 150 m long and 35 km wide terrain around the Rennsteig is ideal for a short break and some easy skiing. Wonderful nature, clear air and beautiful winter landscapes are waiting here for you, in the western part of the area, near Neustadt. Let yourself be inspired by the pretty castles and fortresses and wander on the paths of ancient poets - the German masters of literature, Goethe and Schiller, both spent time in this region.
