Ski vacations Wolfgangsee - Winter wonderland in Salzkammergut
Wolfgangsee
With its 13 km² , the Wolfgangsee is one of the largest lakes in the Salzkammergut in Austria, and both a summer and winter holiday destination. On the northwestern shore of the lake is the ski village of St. Gilgen, with its access to the ski area on Zwölferhorn. On the "Mozarteis" ice skating rink, one can skate to their heart's content, and further winter activities can be enjoyed in the area, such as hockey and sledding. Some 30 minutes by foot from the centre of St. Gilgen, the natural toboggan run awaits you and all toboggan lovers at the Weisswand. A winter hiking paradise opens up at the Schafbergs (1,782 m), of which rises up above the market area of St. Wolfgang, on the eastern coast of the lake. The charming area is compact due to the surrounding hills and, in combination with the St. Wolfgang church on the lake shore, creates a picturesque landscape. From here, hiking trails lead to the Schafberg, whose peak has been heavily developed and, with rustic catering and observation areas, is a great location for a day trip. During Advent, the Schafsberg lift becomes the "Adventsdampfzug", which entails guests being taken to the punch hut in order to enjoy a delicious, hot drink.During the time shortly before Christmas, the communities around the Wolfgangsee offer an exciting programme for the whole family. A visit to any of the favourite Advent markets in the areas of St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, and Strobl is certainly worthwhile. Winter hiking in gorgeous Salzkammergut must be written on your to-do list. From the mountain station at the Zwölferhorn, take a 4 km long panoramic tour to the Pillstein, where you will be served up a brilliant panoramic view.
Salzkammergut
The holiday region of Salzkammergut lies on the northern Alpine border and is situated in northern Austria, on the border to Steiermark and near Salzburg. Salkammergut extends from the Wolfgangsee, over the Almtal and the Dachstein glacier, and all the way to the eastern edge of the city of Salzburg. With its gorgeous location in the Alpine foothills and on the edge of the northern Limestone Alps, the landscape harbours 76 lakes of various sizes, such as the Wolfgangsee, Mondsee, Attersee, and the Traunsee. Innumerable mountains, such as the Dachstein, Traunstein, and the Höllengebirge, create a dreamy, wintery panoramic view.Travel Wolfgangsee
